A large portion of the London Stadium crowd booed Justin Gatlin when he received his gold medal for 100m victory on Sunday night.
The American shocked Usain Bolt and Christian Coleman to win Saturday’s blue riband event but didn’t receive the usual adoration for his success.
After a change to the schedule, Gatlin received his World Championship gold medal an hour earlier than planned.
He stunned the packed Olympic Stadium last night when he beat Usain Bolt into third place.
But as Gatlin held his finger to his lips following his victory, he was roundly booed by the crowd.
He was crowned before the night’s events began, with the Star Spangled Banner playing, and got a similar response.
The athletics’ governing body has denied the ceremony was moved to combat any alleged negative reception.
