Agbani Darego is not a new name to anyone honestly.
She’s a beauty queen and a Nigerian model who came into limelight after winning the 2001 edition of Silverbird’s Most Beautiful Girl In Nigeria (MBGN) where she represented her home state as Miss Rivers.
From winning MBGN, Agbani went on to the Miss Universe beauty pageant and became the first Nigerian to place among the top 10 semi-finalists, finishing seventh overall.
As it is status quo, all MBGNs get to contest for the Miss World competition and Agbani was no exception as she went on to Sun City in South Africa and made it to the top 5.
And from top 5, Agbani Darego became Miss World 2001 winning 93 contestants to become the first Nigerian and the first Sub-Saharan African to bring that crown here. Her predecessor is the popular Indian actress, Priyanka Chopra.
And in that same vein, she handed over to Miss Turkey in 2002.
Since then, we’ve not had any other one from Sub-Saharan Africa bring home the crown. So we wait for the future and celebrate Agbani because e no easy!
